Geevagh Native Celebrates 100th Birthday

Geevagh Native Celebrates 100th Birthday

John Mc Menamin formerly of Knockroe Geevagh celebrated his 100th Birthday recently in Olney Washington DC with his four sons and their families.

John is Paddy Joe Conlon’s (deceased in 2017) older step brother as their mother Mary Mc Dermott (Crosshill, Arigna) was married to Patrick Mc Menamin who died tragically in a mining accident in Scotland after John was born. She later married Patrick Conlon, Knockroe and they had four children all of whom emigrated except for Paddy Joe who stayed at home on the farm in Knockroe.

John was a regular visitor home to Geevagh and he can still recount vividly his working days in the mines and all the local Geevagh people he met and chatted with on his visits as he still has a sharp memory and great attention to detail!!

Paddy Joe’s daughter Mary Sheeran and her daughter Rena travelled out to Washington DC to celebrate John’s 100th birthday at a party hosted by his family.

John was thrilled to receive his  Centenarian Bounty and Congratulatory Letter signed by President Michael D Higgins on reaching his 100th Birthday.

We wish him many more years of good health and longevity.
